How many years has this event taken place?

About 35 years, but we aren't sure.

The history of this race is quite interesting.  John Heinz moved here with his partners in the Red Shutter Inn in 1975 (or 76?) from Banff.  When in Banff he was instrumental in starting a winter relay race from the top of Mt Norquay to the town of Banff.  In the early 1980’s he was also instrumental in reviving our Winter Carnival and introducing the relay as part of the festivities.  I remember dressing up in period costumes (circa 1897) kindly loaned to us by Rossland Light Opera company and advertising the Winter Carnival in Trail, Castlegar and Nelson with John and my husband...quite a threesome, I might add!  We knocked on the doors of many businesses looking for prize donations for various Carnival events!  Although the race has undergone a few changes it is still basically a super fun community oriented all ages event.  Let‘s get out there and encourage some good old- fashioned community team spirit in memory of John!  I hope there is still a prize for the best ”costumed“ team!

This fun relay race happens on Sunday at Red.  You can pre-register at Bear Country Kitchen.

Congratulations to the "Black Jack the Ripper" team of young people who won the John Heintz Cup trophy.  Their names will be engraved on a plaque on the base for all time!  Thanks to all who participated and to the Rossland Winter Carnival for continuing this fun event.
