We will bring the classroom to you, pledge innovative educators in Rossland

Staff and teachers at Seven Summits Centre for Learning in Rossland, B.C. will be bringing the classroom into the homes of its students to ensure academic resilience is maintained as social distancing measures come into force and B.C. schools are shut down indefinitely.

“Our primary focus is to keep our staff and learning family safe during these unprecedented times but to also ensure there is minimal disruption to our students’ education, particularly those who are planning to graduate this year,” says Ann Quarterman, operations manager at Seven Summits Centre for Learning which will remain closed after Spring Break for face-to-face teaching. “We’re really experiencing first-hand the strength of our blended learning model during this crisis and it’s with incredible ease that we can just switch our courses to 100% online,” she adds.

“Our students are in an incredibly strong position. They already have everything they need online, benefit from the support of our teaching staff, can complete assignments at home instead of coming into the learning centre each day and won’t have to play catch up when normality returns. Interactive flipped classrooms are just one of the curriculum enhancements we will be implementing in small online groups  – effectively beaming the traditional way of learning into their home,” says 7S Science teacher Jennifer Boutilier. This should bring a huge relief to local families affected by the sweeping changes. “It will be very much business as usual at 7S with no delays in learning or a lowering of expectations,” she adds.

“Imagination, flexibility and togetherness is what our community needs; we’re confident that we can adapt swiftly to the changes required and can continue to provide a cutting-edge high-school education, whatever the crisis,” explains Joyce Oostindie, administrator, Seven Summits Centre for Learning.

Seven Summits Centre for Learning was established by the community, for the community, seven years ago to provide greater educational choice in Rossland and throughout British Columbia to the benefit of athletes and non-athletes alike.  Following the B.C. Ministry of Education’s 21st Century Learning Model and supported by fully certified B.C. teachers, its alumni continue to extend their education at top universities across the world, including Harvard and UBC. Its forward thinking approach, which includes ‘Free Fridays’, ensures students in grades 8 to 12 can pursue a range of courses facilitated by SD71 Navigate Nides’ award-winning learning program. These are usually delivered by blending traditional face-to-face teaching with virtual pioneering online classrooms, in 7S’ iconic red-roofed heritage building located within the heart of Rossland.
