Alert: Dog Safety Backside of KC

ALERT:

I was just talking to a fellow who told me his dog got very sick on Friday March 20th 2015 after walking on the trail backside of KC....severe vomiting and some diarrhea. The dog was better by Sunday. The dog owner reminded me that two dogs got very sick on the Cemetery Loop last year and I remembered the story which was posted on Bhubble on May 9th 2014.  ( See Below) There may be something that is toxic to dogs, that comes out in the spring so just wanted to give a heads up that the backside of KC and the Cemetery Loop might be trails to avoid for the time being. Please pass this on to your friends.

Possible Issue for Dogs in Spring Cleaning/Cemetery Area

ยท         Alerts: Public Safety

Yesterday we took our 2 dogs on a run on the Spring Cleaning/Cemetery Loop at around 5 pm. When they got back, our 5 y/o Spaniel started convulsing and went into seizures and respiratory distress. Our 1 y/o Husky cross started showing similar symptoms, although not as bad, a short while later.

Despite the amazing care and efforts of the veterinarians, our Spaniel had to be put down late last night. The other dog is fine after a night on fluids, sedation, and induced vomiting.

We are not certain what exactly our dogs got into, but we are quite sure that it was something they encountered during the run on the trails, whether splashing or drinking from the puddles and streams or rooting around in the muck. The incredibly rapid onset of distress in our Spaniel points to something highly toxic to dogs - which could be an algae, a mold, or some sort of chemical.

We do not want to "fearmonger" or freak people out - but we just wanted to let people know that there could be something dangerous for dogs in that area.

We also want to thank Elaine and Rob Klemmensen of the West Kootenay Animal Hospital for their fast response and compassionate care. We are lucky to live in a community with such caring and amazing professionals.
