UPDATE: Bobsled race is back ON!

UPDATE

Rossland, BC (January 25, 2024) – Hold onto your hats, Rossland! We've hit a game-changing moment for the Sonny Samuelson Bobsled Race at the Rossland Winter Carnival 2024!
Following yesterday's unfortunate weather-related cancellation of the beloved Bobsled event, the Public Works department, in collaboration with Winter Carnival, is thrilled to unveil the new, exclusive Bobsled-light event for Saturday January 27th.
With current temperatures ruling out an ice track, a snow course is taking shape on a shorter route, with the start line lowered to Spokane, between 3rd and 2nd Avenues. While certain sleds face design limitations, a considerable number are ready and eager to partake in this exciting new snow track event. While it may not mirror the traditional bobsled experience, we are confident it will captivate both spectators and participants alike!
Temperature Roulette:
Now, let's talk about the wildcard – temperatures playing roulette around 0 degrees Celsius. The team is diligently crafting and grooming the course, but with the whims of Mother Nature, the final outcome on Saturday morning is still uncertain. We're yellow-lighted – proceed with hope and keep those fingers crossed. After construction, a thorough inspection will decide whether this comeback story is destined for the winter sports archives.
Stay tuned for updates on the website and social media channels. In the meantime, bust out those snow dances and savor the remainder of Carnival weekend!
Big thanks to our dedicated volunteers, sledders and residents for spreading winter carnival vibes in Rossland! While the event may be slower, please adhere to the same spectator rules as the regular bobsled event.

Rossland, BC (January 24, 2024) – With regret, the Rossland Winter Carnival Committee announces the cancellation of the highly anticipated Sonny Samuelson Bobsled Race scheduled for Saturday, January 27th, 2024. After careful consideration and assessment of current weather conditions, Public Works has determined that the Bobsled track down Spokane Street cannot be saved.
It was concluded this afternoon that the weather, with temperatures above freezing, has prevented the track from setting. Localized flooding and challenges for residents accessing their homes have further exacerbated the situation. Despite efforts to mitigate the impact, including attempts to bring in additional snow, shorten the course, and even consider road closures, the unfavorable weather conditions persist.
The possibility of freezing temperatures and a minor snowfall is also deemed insufficient to salvage the race unless there is a significant drop to around -5°C and a substantial accumulation of snow. Making the decision now will afford teams and volunteers the opportunity to adjust their plans in advance of the weekend.
The Rossland Winter Carnival Committee expresses its sincere disappointment and shares the community's sentiment regarding this unfortunate turn of events. Despite the cancellation of the Bobsled Race, the Carnival will continue with numerous other exciting events throughout the weekend, offering a diverse range of activities for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Stay tuned for more event updates throughout the weekend! The Rossland Winter Carnival Committee extends its gratitude to the community, our sponsors & partners, and the dedicated volunteers for their understanding and continued support.
